How did it happen?
If an individual has become overweight or obese, they have accumulated an excessive amount of fat within their body that may then place their general health and wellbeing at risk.  They increase the threat of developing a number of chronic diseases that include diabetes, cancer and cardiovascular disease.

The system used to determine if a person is obese or overweight is the Body Mass Index (BMI). This is a simple calculation of weight for height.

To calculate a BMI your weight in kilograms needs to be divided by the square of your height in metres, (kg/m2).  It is very easy to check out your BMI as there are plenty of websites that can calculate it for you.

More adults and children throughout the Western World are becoming overweight and obese and these figures are rising every year. This is because more calories are being consumed than needed by the body to function.  If more calories are being eaten than are burnt off and daily activities are not as physically demanding as they once were, the excess calories will be stored by the body as fat.  Modern diets rich in fat and calories and our love of labour saving devices have resulted in our society becoming more overweight and obese.

If after reading the above you feel that you are overweight or obese act now as the effects of being overwieght or obese are very dangerous to your long term health.

Being overweight or obese may affect an individual’s quality of life and may even limit that life.  It can place restrictions on particular actions and may prevent people from taking part in some physical or social activities. This can be due to the low energy levels, breathlessness and poor mobility associated with obesity.   Over a period of time these physical effects can influence self-esteem and confidence, which in time can lead to  isolation, low mood and depression.

Obesity can increase the risk of developing chronic health conditions such as,

Cardiovascular disease, heart disease and strokes

Diabetes

Musculo-skeletal conditions, osteoarthritis

Cancers, especially endometrial cancer, breast cancer and colon cancer.
