Why am I feeling unhappy?
Feeling generally unhappy can be linked to low self-esteem or poor body image and low confidence. low self-esteem can be caused by a change in personal circumstances such as loss of a job, relationship ending or the diagnosis of a medical condition. Low self esteem can also be as a result of modern society and the media. We are surrounded everyday by images of perfectly thin women and attractive muscular men. These images are portrayed as being very happy, healthy, wealthy and successful and seemingly have the ideal life. These images can create pressure on people to try to achieve these high and often very unrealistic standards. People may not realise that these images are idealised and unobtainable for most of society. They can therefore find themselves in a cycle of dissatisfaction with their appearance, body and lifestyle. This may lead to low self-esteem and a lack of confidence. Then things start to get worse! People with low self-esteem will probably have negative views on life and may begin to feel depressed, hopeless or worthless. This can lead to feelings of emptiness, isolation and loneliness. It can be difficult to feel motivated when every activity feels too difficult or too much trouble. How can I stop things from getting worse? People with low self esteem can feel that they are being treated badly and victimised and there is nothing that they can do about it. They may search for an individual to help and often have unrealistic expectations upon friendships or relationships, this can also cause distress. They may even start to feel that the world is against them. This causes them to treat other people as possible rivals or as their potential liberator and after a period of time they feel let down or treated badly by this person and this becomes a vicious circle. Break the vicious circle, things can get better, learn how to! Describe your situation to one of the team they will help. Most people, after a period of time adjusting to the ordeal, can recover. A healthy person can often deal with many knocks to their self esteem as long as their basic sense of self worth is positive. For those who have experienced a series of personal blows, recovery can be more difficult and they may require help and support to learn how to build their self-esteem and recover. Feeling a high level of self-esteem is when everything in your life feels great, friends are plentiful and there are lots of positive opportunities landing at your feet. When people reflect over their life they can often recognise when events such as a promotion at work, falling in love or winning a prize have raised their self-esteem. With the correct expert help you could recover quicker. If you want to learn how, explain your current circumstances to one of the team at how’s me and they will provide you with the support you need.
