People often openly describe themselves as feeling depressed, experiencing low mood and being less interested in life generally or from going through a stage of depression.
This is quite natural from time to time and over a short period of time these feelings will alter and pass or you can distract yourself by engaging in another activity.
If however, these feelings do not pass and they start to interfere with your life, you feel like you are experiencing more bad days than good days you could be suffering from depression.
Depression even in its mildest form (feeling in a low mood) can make the most straightforward task more of a challenge and the effort unbearable.
Depression can present in a variety of levels ranging from low mood to severe cases where individuals feel like they can no longer cope and want to end their life.
There are some specific types of depression;
Post-natal depression
This effects women after childbirth, it is much more intense than experiencing "the baby blues".
Doctors believe that changing hormone levels after the birth and adjusting to the demands and stress place upon a new mother cause 'the baby blues'.
At the time it is distressing for the individual however, it does not last long and should pass.
However post-natal depression can appear up to two years after the birth and is acknowledged as a serious problem. It is not a weakness of the individual concerned or a failure of their ability to cope OR be a great parent. At least one in ten new mothers can experience post-natal depression.
It can range in its severity and a lot of suffers are often to frightened to tell the medical professionals involved in their care that they are troubled and suffering at this stage of their life.
Seasonal Affective Disorder
Commonly referred to as SAD, also known as winter depression.
If you only become depressed in the autumn and winter months you might be affected by the lack of day light and be suffering from this condition.
It can vary in its severity from people feeling in a generally lower mood to a level at which it disables the individual.
It is very common possibly effecting one in three of the population and it often goes undiagnosed.
Manic Depression or Bipolar Disorder
People that suffer from this form of depression will swing from experiencing moods of severe low deep depression to periods of over excitability and extreme highs. The individual might also hear things that others have not and some times see things that others do not see. This is known as visual or auditory hallucinations or delusions.
