Do you understand Anger and how it affects you?
Experiencing Anger is part of being human; it is a natural expression of emotion.
If we think back to our primitive days, anger helps us survive by giving us the extra energy and strength to fight back or run away. This is often referred to as the fight or flight instinct.
Anger is often seen as a negative feeling and we may be frightened by anger and the intense feelings that it produces.
The way we have been socialised, our parenting, our experiences at school and our cultural beliefs will affect how we try to manage anger.
The most common expectation of how to manage anger is that we should suppress the feelings.
Feeling angry can cause physical changes in the body. Adrenalin is released raising your heart rate and preparing your body for either flight or fight. This tension builds up in your body and when it is released this is your expression of anger.
Release of this tension can feel good. It will free you from the stress and pressure and allow your mind and body to function more harmoniously.
Therefore, suppression of these emotions can have negative effects on the body and mind causing both physical and other emotional problems and distress.
Physical problems can include changes in digestion function, the heart, cause high blood pressure, reduce immunity, change energy levels, cause headaches and increase sensitivity to feelings of pain.
Emotional distress can include depression, lack of motivation or interest in life, an increased or decreased appetite, a lack of sex drive, and compulsive cleaning, eating, over working or other compulsive behaviour. It may also be expressed as intimidating behaviour or unexplained outbursts of emotion in an inappropriate environment. Emotional distress can lead to an increased need for drugs or alcohol.
Why can anger management be so difficult?
If we have not experienced positive lessons in our lives of how to deal with these feelings of anger we can find ourselves struggling to manage anger as we have not developed the necessary skills and coping mechanisms.
It is extremely important to acknowledge that the altering situations we face during our life can place us under considerable amounts of stress and it is in these times that we might discover that we are unable to manage our anger and its intensity, and this can be frightening.
Examples of situations that may cause us to feel angry are a birth, illness, an accident, an assault, a house move, a job or school change, moving away to attend college or university, leaving home and experiencing death.
The use of alcohol or drugs can also affect the way in which we manage anger.
